Pixel Art Throwback: A Love Letter to Classic Fire Emblem
For tactical RPG fans, the classic Fire Emblem series will always hold a special place in our hearts. Recently, a new pixel art tactics game called Sword Requiem, developed by Kuroha Studio, has caught the attention of the SRPG community.
This title not only recaptures the charm of retro pixel art in its visuals, but also pays deep homage to classic SRPGs in its core gameplay. The game now has full English support, making it a must-play for veteran hardcore tactics players who’ve been missing the old-school feel.
Grand Narrative: The Turbulent State of the Demon World
The game is set in a fantasy continent known as the “Demon World”. Long ago, four great heroes joined forces to defeat the evil god, bringing a short period of peace to the world. But that peaceful life didn’t last forever.
As the Saint Caron Empire and the Burkard Kingdom clashed over mineral resources, the continent was thrown back into war. What’s even more suspicious is that the former heroes have all disappeared, and various religious factions are stepping into the chaos one after another.
Players will take on the role of the protagonist, who gets caught up in the conflict, leading their companions to survive through the fog of war. The story features multiple plot twists, digging deep into the conspiracy behind the war, and giving players an amazing immersive narrative experience.
Innovative Combat: The Strategic Depth of the AP System
While the visual style is close to Fire Emblem, this title introduces a unique AP (Action Point) system to its mechanics. Each character can spend AP to perform multiple attacks in a single turn, which greatly expands the operational space within one round.
This design breaks free from the traditional “one action per unit” limit. By properly allocating your AP, you can turn the tide of battle with high-frequency attacks or flexible movement, even when you’re short on resources in the early game.
Progression System: Rich Classes and Engraving Choices
The game offers an incredibly deep progression system, with 21 playable characters and as many as 29 class branches. Paired with 145 different equipment items, players can freely build a powerful combat team.
The unique “Engraving System” allows characters to form a contract with specific powers. Since each character can only bind to one engraving, combined with the branching class promotion paths, every choice you make will have an impact on your mid-to-late game tactics.
Hardcore Challenge: Tactical Chess Matches on High Difficulty
Sword Requiem is not just another casual fast-food game. Its level design is incredibly challenging. For example, the key Sword Master level requires players to finish the battle in an extremely short number of turns, which really tests your planning ability.
For players who are chasing the ultimate tactical experience, this high-pressure combat environment is exactly where its charm lies. What’s more, a sequel to this series is already in the development plan, which is definitely worth keeping an eye on for all tactics game fans.
