Valkyria Chronicles 4: Beginner Tips for New Players

When I first started playing Valkyria Chronicles 4, I thought it was just another regular SRPG. I moved my units forward, shot at enemies, and wondered why I kept getting my squad wiped. I spent three days stuck on the first big mission, because I had no clue how the BLiTZ system worked, or what the Valkyria stuff even did. I was treating it like Fire Emblem, and it was a total disaster.

If you’re new to the game, don’t make the same mistakes I did. These 10 simple tips will help you get the hang of the unique mechanics, avoid the common pitfalls, and smooth out your first playthrough.

1. Watch Out for Interception Fire

This was my first huge mistake. I thought if I had enough movement, I could just run my unit straight across the map to the objective. Nope! Every enemy with a rifle or machine gun will shoot at your units when they move through their line of sight.

I tried to run my scout across an open field once, and he got shot to pieces by three different interception fires before he even got halfway. Always check the enemy’s interception range before you move! If you see that red line, don’t walk through it unless you have to.

2. Scouts Are Your Early Game MVPs

I ignored scouts at first, I thought they were too weak to fight. Big mistake. Scouts have the highest movement in the game, they can capture enemy bases in one turn, and they can spot hidden enemies that your other units can’t see.

I used to spend forever moving my slow heavy soldiers around, until I realized I could just send a scout to cap the enemy base and end the entire mission in 2 turns. They’re also perfect for grabbing those hidden items and intel around the map that you’d otherwise miss.

3. Don’t Waste All Your CP on One Unit

The Command Point system is weird at first, and I messed it up bad. I thought I should dump all my CP into my strongest sniper, so he could get off one big shot at the boss. I used 5 CP on that one shot, and then I had no points left to move anyone else.

The enemies just walked right up and wiped my whole team. Don’t do that! Save your CP, spread it out between your units. Don’t waste all of it on one big attack, you need to have enough points to move your other units and defend yourself.

4. Always Bring At Least One Engineer

I forgot engineers existed for the first few missions. Then my tank ran out of ammo halfway through a huge fight, and I had no way to restock it. I was stuck, my tank was just a sitting duck, and I lost the mission.

Engineers are so useful. They can restock your units’ ammo, fix broken tanks, disarm mines, and even heal your soldiers. They’re not just support units, they’re essential. Always bring at least one on every mission, you’ll thank me later.

5. Cover Is Everything, Don’t Stand In The Open

This sounds obvious, but I didn’t get it at first. In this game, if you’re standing in the open, enemies will hit you 100% of the time. If you’re behind cover, they can barely hit you, even if they’re right next to you.

I used to leave my units out in the open because I thought they were tough, and they’d get one-shot by a random rifleman. Always end your turn behind cover, no exceptions. Even if it means you can’t attack this turn, staying alive is more important.

6. Save Valkyria Mode For Emergencies

I was so excited when I unlocked Valkyria mode, I used it on the first random group of enemies I saw. Then, 10 minutes later, I got swarmed by a huge boss and a bunch of reinforcements, and I had no Valkyria mode left to save me.

Don’t waste it! Valkyria mode is your get-out-of-jail-free card. Save it for when you’re in real trouble, like when your tank is about to die, or you need to take out a big boss fast, or you’re about to get wiped. Don’t use it just to clear a few trash mobs.

7. Use Your Tank To Tank Damage, It’s What It’s For

I was scared to use my tank at first, I thought if it got damaged I’d lose it forever. No! The tank is your frontline tank. It can take way more damage than your infantry, that’s what it’s built for.

I used to hide my tank behind my soldiers, and my soldiers would get killed instead. Now I just drive the tank right into the middle of the enemies, they all shoot at it, and it barely takes any damage. It’s the perfect way to draw fire away from your squishy infantry.

8. Flank Enemies, Don’t Fight Them Head-On

Enemies have a facing, right? If you attack them from the front, they can block your shots, counterattack, and they take less damage. If you attack them from the side or behind, they can’t do any of that!

I spent forever fighting a heavy tank from the front, doing 1 damage per hit, until I realized I could just drive my tank around to the back and one-shot him. Flanking is way more powerful than you think. Always try to get behind enemies if you can, it makes fights so much easier.

9. Capture Enemy Bases To Get More CP

I didn’t realize this at first. When you capture an enemy base, you get extra Command Points! That means you can move more units per turn, which makes everything easier.

I was struggling with a big mission, until I captured two enemy bases, and suddenly I had twice as many CP to work with. It made the whole mission trivial. Always cap those enemy bases as fast as you can, it’s the easiest way to get an advantage.

10. Grenades Ignore Cover, Use Them!

I used to try to shoot enemies hiding behind sandbags, and I’d miss every single time. Then I realized I could just throw a grenade at them! Grenades ignore cover, they hit everyone in the area, even if they’re hiding behind something.

I used this to take out whole groups of enemies hiding behind cover, it was so easy. Don’t be afraid to use your grenades, they’re way more useful than you think. Don’t save them for “later”, use them when you need them, they’ll make tough fights a breeze.

Final Thoughts

I spent so long stuck on the early game because I was treating Valkyria like every other SRPG. Once I figured out these simple tips, the whole game clicked. It’s not about having the strongest units, it’s about using the BLiTZ system right, and knowing what each of your units can do.

You don’t need any fancy builds or meta exploits to beat the game. Just follow these tips, and you’ll be able to get through the early game without getting stuck, just like I did. I wish someone had told me these when I first started, it would have saved me so much time.
